English

In English, our Year 5 students are diving into Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. They've already started by creating eye-catching warning posters, using the four types of sentences. As the term progresses, they'll engage in various writing activities, including journalistic writing, formal letters, non-chronological reports, and narrative retellings. Throughout, they will also be learning and revising key grammar concepts, all designed to strengthen their writing skills.

Maths

In Maths, children are reinforcing their understanding of place value up to 1,000,000. Following this, they will move on to mastering addition and subtraction skills.   Here is an example of what the children have been learning:   Roman Numerals   Place Value

Science 

In Science, students will explore a variety of scientific topics, starting with Properties and Changes of Materials this term. They will compare and group materials based on properties like hardness, solubility, transparency, and conductivity, and learn about dissolving, separating mixtures, and reversible and irreversible changes.

RE

In RE, we are starting a new unit ‘beginning with the church’. Year 5 will be looking at what it means to welcome or initiate someone in our community but also within the church. We will delve into the sacraments of initiation: eucharist, baptism and confirmation as we look at its importance within the church. 

Our learning will be accompanied by church visits, masses and bible stories!

Topic

This term, we will be studying both Geography and History simultaneously. In geography, our focus will be on the River Rhine, exploring its geographical features and significance. Meanwhile, in History, we will dive into the Roman Republic, learning about its origins, governance, and impact on modern civilisation. These topics will offer students a rich understanding of both natural landscapes and historical developments.

Computing

We have been using variables and strings in Purple Mash.

Homework

In Year 5, homework is assigned through Google Classroom. Maths tasks are completed on MyMaths, while Grammar and Reading is set via AtomLearning. Additionally, students have spellings to use in sentences and an extra task related to History, Geography, or RE.

Children are encouraged to read daily and record their notes in their reading records.

P.E. Day for Year 5 – Tuesday.

Full kit is required to be worn to school on both days.

P.E. Kit includes – Plain Navy Tracksuit Bottoms, Plain Navy Sweatshirt, Navy Shorts, White Polo Shirt Top, Black Plimsolls or Plain White/Black Trainers (no logos please)

 

Each week, homework will be given as follows:

Spelling homework is uploaded every Thursday on Google Classroom to be submitted the following Monday.

Maths homework is uploaded every Thursday on MyMaths to be submitted the following Monday.

One piece of R.E. Homework will be set on Google Classroom every half-term. It will be set on a Thursday to be submitted the following Tuesday.                         

Home reading – Home reading books must be read by an adult and signed each week. They will be sent home on a Thursday and should be returned by Tuesday.

 The children should also complete 20 minutes of daily reading.

Topic Related Projects are often given over holiday periods.

Times tables are practised regularly in class, and it would be beneficial if they practice at home also. These are tested regularly.
