Phonics
At St Edmund’s we use ‘Little Wandle’ to teach phonics, common exception words and to support early reading development.
In Reception your child will be taught phonics every day.
Alongside the teaching of phonics, every child will be provided with daily opportunities to apply their phonic knowledge and skills in reading and spelling.

Homework
Homework is put onto ‘Google Classrooms’ on Thursday and is to be handed in on Monday. There will be an English and Maths Homework set weekly.
There will also be weekly phonics and words to learn. Your child is only expected to read the weekly words not write them. When your child is completing their reading, we will also ask your child to read the words and know their phonics.
Once a half-term your child will also be set an R.E. homework and a reading comprehension homework.
From time to time we will send home name writing sheets so that your child can practise writing their name. We use pre cursive letter formation in Reception which may mean that your child will need to practise more often if they have learnt to write their name in a different style.
Use the homework book provided if your child is asked to write for their homework but do not send it into school.
Children will have individual logins for the Active Learn website and Numbots website. Active learn has phonics games and online books to support your child with their reading. Each week a new book will be added to their account. There are pointer and support for parents inside the front and back cover to help you in supporting your child with their reading. Numbots is an interactive online website to support children to develop understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction, so that they move from counting to calculating.
P.E.
Reception’s PE day is Thursday morning and Tuesday morning. Please send your child into school wearing their PE Kits not their school uniforms on Tuesdays.

Wow Moments
We know that school is not the only place that your child will be making progress and learning new things. We would love to hear about these ‘WOW ‘ moments. Feel free to write down these new achievements on a ‘wow card’ and send them in with your child. E.G “Thomas wrote his name independently”, “Thomas ate all of his vegetables”, “Thomas recognised the bus number 78”. We will share your child’s achievements with their class and display on our wall.
All About Me Book
Please share your child’s experiences outside of school by writing a short entry into this book. You may visit the cinema, a party, a museum or go for a nature walk. You could stick in cinema receipt, a map from the museum, a party invitation or leaves/flowers collected from your walk. The children love this opportunity to talk about their experiences, and it is a great opportunity for them to develop their confidence and speaking and listening skills in front of a group. Children really love to share photographs of the experiences too! If you are unable to print your pictures out, please load them onto 'Stream' in the Google Classroom.
