Art & Design
Art
Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think, through the use of colour, texture, line, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Children learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They are introduced to the work of a wide variety of artists, craftspeople and designers and experience a range of practical activities using different media to explore colour, texture and technique in both 2D and 3D forms. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and on different periods and cultures.
At St. Edmunds Catholic Primary School, we are concerned with the education of the whole child. The development of Art & Design skills will enable the achievement of personal fulfilment and will therefore motivate the children to continue to achieve. Success increases self-esteem and gives pleasure in this subject. All children, from the Foundation Stage to the end of Key Stage Two, will have access to Art activities regardless of their gender, race or special educational needs. Throughout the school, all pupils are given opportunities to develop their Art and Design skills such as drawing and painting, printing and model making.
Design and Technology
Design and Technology is a vital part of our daily lives and is an important part of pupils’ learning at St Edmunds Catholic Primary School because it equips our children with an extensive range of practical skills. Children are encouraged to develop their research, problem-solving, teamwork and creative thinking skills and also to make improvements to existing ideas and products. Design and Technology gives our children the opportunity to work and think as individuals and as part of a team, which helps them develop and learn while demonstrating the school’s key practices and values. There are significant links between Design and Technology and many other areas of the curriculum such as maths, science, computing, history and art, which provides opportunities for children to explore different learning experiences.
Cooking and nutrition is an important part of the Design and Technology curriculum. Pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables our children to feed themselves and others affordably, now and in later life.

Year 6 Fashion Show
This term, the Year 6 children have been studying fashion through the ages as part of the Design and Technology curriculum. They started by researching fashion design from the Victorian era through to the present day and particularly focused on fashion made from recycled materials.
As part of the project, the children had to design and make outfits from newspaper. They then presented their outfits to the rest of KS2 at a fashion show, where a chosen model walked the catwalk and another child presented their idea. The children worked extremely well to create exciting and imaginative designs and really enjoyed showing off their hard work.
Black History Month
All year groups have been studying different Black British Artists and recreating their work using a variety of materials. We looked at pictures by
LUBAINA HIMID, CHRIS OFILI, UZO EGONU, SONIA BOYCE and SIR FRANK BOWLING. Here is a display of some of their work.
